UK AI Scale-Ups ElevenLabs, Synthesia, and Luminance Secure Major Funding and Global Traction
While much of the AI spotlight shines on US and Chinese giants, a cohort of UK-based scale-ups is rapidly gaining prominence, securing substantial funding and enterprise adoption. Three companies exemplify this trend: ElevenLabs in voice synthesis, Synthesia in AI video generation, and Luminance in legal AI.
ElevenLabs, founded in 2022 by Polish entrepreneurs Piotr Dabkowski and Mati Staniszewski, has become a leader in AI voice generation and cloning. Its technology powers audio for platforms like Spotify and The Washington Post. The company recently raised $80 million in a Series B round co-led by Andreessen Horowitz, Nat Friedman, and Daniel Gross, achieving a valuation of $1.1 billion. This follows a previous $19 million Series A in mid-2023. ElevenLabs reports over 1.5 million registered users, including 41% of the Fortune 500, and generates more than 100 years of audio content monthly.
Synthesia, established in 2017, specializes in generating professional AI avatars and videos for corporate training and communications. Its clients include major corporations like Amazon, Nike, and Johnson & Johnson. In a significant funding milestone, Synthesia raised $90 million in a June 2024 round led by Accel, valuing the company at $1 billion. The London-based firm, which also has offices in New York and Copenhagen, emphasizes the ethical use of its technology, requiring explicit consent for avatar creation and prohibiting deepfakes.
Luminance, founded in 2015, applies proprietary AI (developed from Cambridge University research) to automate legal document review and analysis. It has attracted over 600 customers across 70 countries, including a quarter of the world's largest law firms. In April 2024, Luminance secured $40 million in a Series B round led by March Capital, with participation from National Grid Partners and others. The company is expanding its technology beyond law firms to in-house legal teams at major corporations.
The rise of these companies underscores the UK's strengthening position in applied AI. Unlike foundational model developers, these scale-ups focus on specific, high-value enterprise verticals—media, corporate communications, and legal services—demonstrating robust commercial traction and attracting top-tier Silicon Valley and global investors. Their growth signals a maturing European AI ecosystem capable of producing globally competitive, category-defining companies.
