The European Commission is unlocking over €350 million in dedicated funding for defense electronics through its European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP). In a significant policy shift, the program now explicitly includes printed circuit boards (PCBs) and integrated circuit substrates as eligible for financial support for the first time.
This move follows the Commission's initial presentation of the EDIP framework in March 2024. The newly allocated funds are specifically targeted at strengthening the European industrial base for critical electronic components used in defense systems, addressing strategic dependencies and supply chain vulnerabilities.
By formally incorporating PCBs and IC substrates—fundamental hardware layers in all modern electronics—into its funding scope, the EU is signaling a concerted effort to bolster sovereignty in defense manufacturing. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on non-European sources for these essential technologies, which are vital for everything from communications equipment to guided weapons systems.
