Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli has formed a strategic partnership with Swedish startup Univrses, acquiring a 30% stake in the company. The move aims to integrate Univrses’ AI-driven computer vision technology into Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre system, a platform that uses sensors embedded in tyres to collect real-time data on road conditions and vehicle dynamics.
Univrses specialises in 3D computer vision and machine learning, enabling precise environmental perception from cameras. Under the agreement, Pirelli will combine the tyre sensor data with Univrses’ visual analysis to enhance vehicle awareness of road surfaces, hazards, and grip levels. The collaboration intends to feed this fused data into driver-assistance systems and autonomous driving modules, improving safety by anticipating risks like aquaplaning, ice, or potholes.
Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre already monitors pressure, temperature, and wear, transmitting information to onboard electronics. By adding visual context—such as detecting water depth or road texture—the system could adjust vehicle behaviour proactively. Pirelli’s investment underscores its push into software-defined mobility, linking physical tyre performance to digital ecosystems. The partnership positions both companies to offer next-generation road safety solutions, with potential applications in connected vehicles, fleet management, and smart infrastructure.
