German science and technology group Merck officially opened a new €20 million, 4,500-square-meter site in Saint-Ismier (Isère) on May 5, significantly expanding its capacity to produce metrology and inspection tools for advanced chip manufacturing. The facility, located in the French Alps semiconductor cluster near Grenoble, will increase the company’s production output fivefold, bolstering Europe’s semiconductor equipment supply chain at a time when the continent pushes for greater technological sovereignty.

The investment underscores Merck’s strategic role in providing enabling tools for semiconductor fabs, complementing its materials and chemicals business. The plant’s metrology and inspection systems are critical for ensuring quality and precision in the fabrication of leading-edge logic, memory, and specialty chips, serving customers globally while reinforcing local industrial capabilities. The Saint-Ismier facility strengthens Merck’s footprint in the European electronics ecosystem and aligns with regional efforts to reduce dependence on non-European suppliers in the chip sector.
