The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) has launched the FAMES pilot line, a new facility dedicated to advancing five key microelectronics technologies. The line is now open to the commission's industrial and academic partners with the goal of accelerating the development of higher-performance, more energy-efficient, and more sustainable semiconductor chips.

FAMES focuses on maturing critical processes, including advanced 3D integration, new memory architectures, photonic integration, power electronics based on wide-bandgap semiconductors like gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC), and sensors. By providing shared access to this state-of-the-art infrastructure, the CEA aims to bolster the European microelectronics industry's capacity for innovation and reduce its dependence on external supply chains. The initiative represents a strategic investment in the continent's technological sovereignty and competitive positioning in the global semiconductor market.
